Purpose of the review

The Australian Government’s 2024-25 Budget announced funding for a new National Early Intervention Service (NEIS) to provide low-intensity mental health support to people at risk of or experiencing mild mental ill-health or transient distress.

The new national service will launch in July 2026 and aims to make low-intensity mental health services free and more accessible to consumers without the requirement for a diagnosis or referral from a General Practitioner.

In line with the introduction of the NEIS, COORDINARE is undertaking a review of the current low intensity service offerings in South Eastern NSW to assess the effectiveness of current approaches and identify any barriers, gaps and potential duplication with the NIES in relation to the current service model.

The information and insights gathered through this review will be considered and used by COORDINARE to inform our approach to future commissioning of these vital services for people in our region.

In early 2026, we are aiming to make decisions and commence any change management processes required, to ensure certainty and continuity for existing clients and workforce involved in this program.

What's next in the process

We appreciate and value the participation of local health professionals, health care providers and community in this review and will need this input to understand what is working well, where the gaps lie and opportunities to improve our services and the experience of people seeking support.

More information about how you can get involved in this process will be shared via this webpage in the coming weeks.
